A man fleeing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents crashed into a parked SUV and snapped a utility pole in Teaneck on Sunday morning, July 26, leaving one driver trapped inside a vehicle surrounded by live wires for about an hour, police said.

Teaneck police responded to the intersection of Queen Anne Road and Walraven Drive at approximately 11:21 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle had struck a utility pole, according to a department release. One of the callers identified themselves as an ICE officer.

Officers arrived to find two damaged vehicles, a snapped utility pole and wires across the roadway. ICE agents were also at the scene, police said.

The investigation found the driver of a 2017 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on Walraven Drive while attempting to flee pursuing ICE agents when the pickup struck a parked 2026 Nissan Rogue, police said. The impact pushed the SUV into a utility pole, snapping it and bringing wires down onto the roadway and additional parked vehicles.

The Tacoma driver complained of head pain but was evaluated by the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps and refused further medical treatment, police said. No one else was injured.

One of the parked vehicles struck by the fallen wires was occupied at the time, and the occupant had to remain inside for approximately one hour until PSE&G crews made the scene safe, according to police.

Daily Voice previously reported that witnesses said the fleeing vehicle drove onto the curb, maneuvered around a tree, struck parked vehicles and crashed into the utility pole. Witnesses also reported hearing ICE agents identify themselves during the incident.

Teaneck Councilman Michael Pagan, a vocal critic of ICE, previously told Daily Voice: “Every time ICE is around, they jeopardize public safety.”

“We don’t want ICE in Teaneck. ICE should be abolished.”
